Happy Thanksgiving!! As an honorary member of the family you want your dog or cat to partake in the thanksgiving festivities. These can range from an annual Thanksgiving marathon to the looked forward-to feast. Here are some tips or guidelines for a safe Petsgiving from Bella and Bonnie Blue.

Hi there humans. Our names are Bella and Bonnie Blue, at least that is what we respond to. Today our mom came home with a super amazing smelling thing. Mmmm. I cannot wait to eat it!! But mom says we have to wait until it is done. But it has been forever!!!

My mom also says that we can only have a few special treats tonight. She takes great care of what she feeds us. We only know this because it takes FUR-EVER for her to give it to us, even though we sit politely and wait… Whenever we eat something special mom is always hovering over us, I guess it is to make sure we are OK. Anyway, here are some tips to keep us healthy and things we should eat, as said by mom:

While this can be a wonderful way to add lean protein and fresh veggies to your pet’s diet, there are also hidden dangers in holiday fare.

#10 Turkey Please

Turkey is a great source of protein for us. It is in a lot of our foods but this turkey tastes better! We just cannot have any excess skin or fat. We definitely prefer the white meat, and please make sure there are no bones. If we injest bones, they can splinter and cause problems in our tummys and insides. That’s no fun for us or your money.

#9 No thank you to Alliums

Nothing with alliums (i.e., onions, garlic, leeks, scallions). We have no idea what this means but mom keeps saying it. We aren’t sure why either but it is OK, they don’t smell good anyway.

#8 More Mashed Potatoes

Potatoes are super yummy! Usually we do not like veggies, but mom says these are veggies and these are super delicious. They also make us full super fast. However even though the potatoes themselves are not harmful to us, be aware of additional ingredients such as cheese, sour cream, butter, onions, and gravies are no-no’s.

#7 Eww Grapes

Grapes are GROSS and can be toxic to us. You don’t want us to be sick do you?! The nice doctor lady says grapes and raisins (whatever those are)  have been known to cause kidney failure.

#6 Yes to Cranberry Sauce (ooo jiggly)

Cranberry sauce is just fine for us but watch the amount of sugar in it, cuz we like to keep our figure. A little bit a day is our favorite treat!

#5 No to Xylitol

I’m not sure why mom keeps using all of these big words when she is talking to us, but I guess a lot of you adults may be making the healthier choice by cooking with artificial sweeteners over the real thing. But sweeteners containing Xylitol are potentially deadly to us.

#4 Mac & Cheese, Mac & Cheese, Mac & Cheese!!!

We sure love macaroni and cheese! Some of our friends can’t eat ice cream or yogurt or cheese, which means more for us. Sometimes mom doesn’t believe the mac and cheese is safe, so she gives us plain noodles.

#3 No to Chocolate

Just NO CHOCOLATE. Bad, bad, bad.

#2 Mmmm Green Beans

We love plain green beans. Well, Bonnie Blue more than I, but they are still good. Fresh veggies are a popular add-in for mom. I’m a little more picky than Bonnie Blue.

#1 No to Alcohol

We aren’t big alcoholics. The same can’t be said for mom. Shhh, I didn’t say that.. But alcohol is definitely a big no no. Also, keep in mind that alcohol poisoning can occur  from atypical items like fruit cake (the recipe may have called for rum or other liquor) and unbaked bread.

From us to you, Happy Thanksgiving! Eat a lot and don’t forget about us small guys down here.
